Have you guys seen Kiss Me Deadly? If you haven't, go rent it. Right now. It's tremendous. Here's one of my favourite scenes:
So, I was thinking about this movie a lot while I was watching David Lynch's Lost Highway. In particular, I noticed all of these allusions to Kiss Me Deadly in Lynch's film. Kiss Me Deadly ends with a house burning down (I'll not spoil the fun as to why the house is burning down, if you haven't seen the film yet). Here's an image from the end of Kiss Me Deadly.
I couldn't get a screen capture from the DVD of Lost Highway because of the copyright protection on the disc. But, if you go to the DVD and take a look at the scene near the end (about 20 minutes left), you'll see the image of the house burning, just like in Kiss Me Deadly.
Also, in Kiss Me Deadly, our hero is friends with Nick, the friendly Greek mechanic stereotype.
There he is! He even got his own catchphrase: "Va-Va-Voom!" |
In Lost Highway, the same role is played by Richard Pryor in his last screen appearance. There are no images of his character online, but he shows up about partway through Lynch's film.
There are most likely a whole bunch of Kiss Me Deadly references that I didn't pick up on. These two are the ones that stuck with me. What I realized is that these references are more or less subtle and do not directly affect the plot. This is totally different from what Lynch does in Wild at Heart.
Yeah, I don't think Mike Hammer ever drives by and says "Look at all the goodies" in Lost Highway. |
I guess you could say that the David Lynch of Lost Highway is all grown up, not wanting to jam the references down your throat. Because the references in Lost Highway are so subtle, who's to say that Lynch has even seen the film? If he has, who's to say that the references are intentional? Maybe Kiss Me Deadly is just a film that has stuck around in his head, and he doesn't remember.
That's all I wanted to say on the matter, just to get those thoughts out there. Here's an image that is sure to perk up your Monday!
